Will there be enough syringes to deliver vaccines?
Syringes: the plastic tube with a piston that is attached to a needle and used to draw or inject fluids. Many countries have already started vaccination process since December. And the world wide vaccination will continue throughout the whole next year. We might ask: Will there be enough syringes to deliver vaccines? Once again we expect to see shortage of such disposable medical equipment in the ongoing Covid-19 situation. The global pandemic has triggered supply shortage one after another, from masks to nitrile gloves, the vaccine supplies will not be an exception.
While many manufacturers are located in Asia, our clients will have to proactively place orders in advance, to meet demand for the upcoming months. The total supply of syringe might be enough, however, when all countries start ordering in the latter half 2021, there will not be sufficient shipping time, not to mention the price.
So how to select syringe and needle?
A 1 mL or 3 mL syringe is used depending on the vaccine dose. For corona vaccine it is suggested a capacity of 3ml. For needle, there should be a length that is long enough to reach deep tissue without involving underlying bone, nerves, or blood vessels. A ‘safety syringe’ is a syringe with a built-in safety mechanism to reduce the risk of injury to healthcare workers and others from accidental needlestick injuries. The needle on a safety syringe can be detachable or permanently attached.
